The Shopkeeper’s Itinerary: A Weekend at Hargan’s Cottage

If you’re planning a weekend away, Hargan’s Cottage is the perfect base to soak up the charm of Carcoar, Millthorpe, Orange and surrounding areas. Here’s my little guide for a relaxed, indulgent, and memorable stay.

Slow down and settle in

When you arrive at Hargan’s Cottage, it’s the perfect time to slow down and settle in. We leave a lovely charcuterie platter and local bottle of wine for you to enjoy as you soak up the calm of the cottage. Relax on the verandah and catch the last of the afternoon sun, or light the outdoor fire and simply enjoy the serenity.

If you’re in the mood for a little self-care during your stay, you might like to try a breathwork session with my daughter Molly @clarityawaits, or a massage at Sage Beauty & Soul in nearby Blayney.

Coffee coffee coffee

Start your day with a coffee in Carcoar, there are a few lovely spots to choose from, including The Village Grocer which is open early and read the newspaper. The newly opened Thousand Words Gallery also has excellent coffee & delicious homemade cakes. On a sunny morning, you can sit outside and enjoy the view of the historic buildings, and if you’re lucky, hear the church bells ring; it always reminds me of being somewhere far away and special.

The Millthorpe Providore for local coffee and, of course, Portuguese tarts is always on my agenda if I am passing through. Can you tell I am a sweet tooth? This little spot is usually buzzing with locals, giving you a true taste of village life.

Stop for Coffee at Millthorpe Providore

While in Millthorpe, take a wander of the streets… you’ll find antique shops, cellar doors, the old train station, and even the local museum, all within walking distance.

If you’re exploring Orange; Byng Street Local Store, Hawkes General Store, and The Good Eddy (open mid-week) are all lovely options for coffee and a relaxed start to the day or after lunch pick me up.

Sip, savour, repeat

Millthorpe is home to three cellar doors: Angullong, Slow Wine Co, and Tamburlaine, all perfect for a relaxed tasting.

In Orange, the choices are endless, but my top picks are: Printhie, Heifer Station, Phillip Shaw, and Rowlee.

Lunchtime in the courtyard

For lunch, The Union Bank is a long-time favourite. Their courtyard is stunning, the share plates are delightful, and they offer a fabulous selection of local wines. A beautiful spot to linger, enjoy the garden, and soak up the atmosphere.

After lunch, take a stroll to Jumbled and Dirty Janes, or wander through the beautiful Cook Park. Don’t miss The Guildary within the park, which has a lovely selection of homemade jams, cakes, and chutneys.

After dark

For dinner, Tonic in Millthorpe is a favourite; perfect for a long lunch or a special evening. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the 5-course set menu is a treat. We’re happy to make a reservation for you and I love that our dear friends are the owners, it adds an extra personal touch.

Roads less travelled

Rockley – Enjoy lunch at Matt Moran’s Rockley Pub, just 50 minutes away.

Molong – Only 20 minutes from Orange, and a must-visit for Molong Stores, run by the lovely Robbie.

Or, keep it simple and have a relaxed meal at the local pub here in Carcoar. At night, don’t forget to look up; the starry sky is breathtaking, and on a clear night, you will always spot the Milky Way!

I trust this guide will make your stay memorable. We can’t wait to host you, plan your stay at Hargan's Cottage now
