Merino wool is a beautiful fibre but needs a gentler hand than most fabrics in your wardrobe, so it's worth following the care label closely. Heat and agitation are what damage natural fibres most, so always hand wash in cold water rather than machine washing. When you're storing your knitwear over the warmer months, tuck in a natural moth and silverfish repellent, lavender works well, to keep it in good condition until next winter.

A little pilling early on is completely normal with natural fibres like merino, it's just the shorter loose fibres working their way out of the knit. A fabric shaver or de-bobbler sorts it out quickly, paired with proper washing as above, and you shouldn't see much more after that. Ongoing or excessive pilling is usually caused by friction, a bag strap or jacket rubbing against the same spot repeatedly, so it's more about wear patterns than the garment itself.
